The wedding-season prep guide for Hindu & Muslim brides

By Laveena · Notes from the chair · 7 min read

Wedding season in Lucknow is not one event, it is a season of seasons: haldi and mehndi, nikah and walima, pheras and receptions, sometimes all in one family in one month. Hindu and Muslim brides walk different ceremonial paths, and a smart prep timeline respects both. Here is the countdown I share with my own brides, whichever aisle, mandap or stage you are headed for.

Eight weeks out: skin first, always

Makeup amplifies the skin it sits on. Start now: a simple cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen routine, water like it is your job, and one gentle exfoliation a week. Introduce nothing new after week four: no first-time facials, no untested actives. Wedding week is not the time to discover an allergy.

Six weeks: the DIY window

This is where tradition genuinely helps. The classic ubtan (besan, a pinch of turmeric, milk or rosewater) is a gentle weekly brightener generations of brides swear by. Rules: patch-test on your inner arm first, keep turmeric minimal unless you enjoy a yellow tint, and stop all DIY masks one week before the first ceremony.

For Hindu brides: pacing the marathon

For Muslim brides: elegance across two days

Different rituals, same physics: heat, tears, hugs and ten hours of photographs. Prep beats panic, every single season.

Wedding week: the do-not list

No new products. No sun. No last-minute threading the day before (give brows 48 hours to calm). Sleep is a highlighter no brand sells. And confirm your trial look with your artist, in photos, in daylight and in indoor light, before the week begins.

The day itself

Eat before the chair. Bring your outfit dupatta for colour-matching. Hand your phone to a cousin. Then let go: this is the part where the look holds and you live your day.
